Ok so today after much hand shaking and sweating i defeated the Capra Demon. Once i received the key from him i entered the 'depths'. In the first area you will find several hounds, and weak undead (some wielding torches as weapons), and a butcher! he's fairly tough but you can trick him by standing at the top of the stairs so he continually falls into the water, after a few strong spells and possibly a couple of strikes from the drake sword he'll die. You'll then progress a little bit to the next area, you'll be in close combat fighting the second butcher after coming to a sort of cross-road. If you turn left after defeating him you'll enter a room full of crates and boxes and hear someone crying for help from the corner.
Now this is the important part *weep* - be EXTREMELY careful when freeing him from the crate, don't hit it with a sword or anything as once you've attacked him he won't stop fighting back. If you do accidentally attack him you can go back to the gargoyle bell tower and pay the man at the bottom to absolve your curses. Unfortunately i did neither of these and accidentally KILLED the first pyromancer NPC so now, no doubt, i will have to wait a long time until meeting the second pyromancer NPC to improve my pyromancy, or worse - i won't ever be able to improve it :'(
oh well... even more excuse to pursue the knight path...
